It somewhat baffles me that as an artist who has been writing his own songs for about 12 years now, I have never fully produced a song with my vocals on it. Well, that’s not entirely true. In the past, I have mucked around editing covers and I did release a “single” in 2012 that I produced, but let’s be honest… it wasn’t very good. (Especially because at that point I didn’t even know what EQ-ing or mastering was.)
I remember receiving heavy criticism from a few colleagues who were producers about that song completely shut me down. At the time the feedback wasn’t very helpful for my growth (in the sense of they didn’t really give me resources to learn or advice of how I could improve) and it made me swear I wouldn’t produce music by myself anymore. So, instead, I started seeking out producers to work with me.
Since 2014, the year where I released my debut album, I’ve done a lot of growing and learning. While I wouldn’t consider myself a master producer, I will say that the art of producing has interested me a lot more. In general, I believe that all art should be a collaboration of some sort, and while I miss sitting in the studio with my producers, there is a great freedom to being able to produce my own music without hearing feedback from others. I’m really grateful for the time I’ve spent with my producers and all of the lessons they’ve taught me, but I’m also so excited for this new “solo” chapter of my life, although it doesn’t mean that I won’t be working with other producers again in the future.
All of that aside, I’m also so grateful for all of the love & support I’ve received on my new song Wake Up and I’m very excited to share this song and many more with you in the new year. For now, if you haven’t heard this song you check it out here:
